Description

This temple which is harmoniously integrated with natural rock formations is located 600 meters west of the famous Beogsongsa rebuilt by Ven. Beogsong Jieom who inherited the Seon (Zen) tradition of Korean Buddhism. Following the devastation caused by the Korean War, for over 1- years, Monk Woneung rebuilt Beogsongsa, by sculpting numerous Buddhist statues on rock formations and building a hall that portrays the Sukhavati or the Land of Bliss which is the ideal world in Buddhism. Against the majestic backdrop of Jirisansan Mountain, the temple boasts its magnificence and splendor. At the entrance of the temple stands the Daebanggwangmun Gate which is the entrance to the Buddhist truths. Beyond the carved statues of the Four Heavenly Kings on rocks and within the temple grounds, there is a stone cave hall that portrays the Pure Land with an Amitabha Buddha as the central deity. On the upper section of the place, there is Gwangmyeongundae that houses numerous Bodhisattvas and meditation caves used by monks. All these structures, carved and sculpted into natural rock, not only represent the pinnacle of Buddhist artistry but they also showcase unique architectural techniques, drawing significant attention from academia. Situated at the entrance of Chilseon Valley, which is regarded as one of the three most beautiful valley in the country for its beauty and grandeur, the temple attracts Buddhist practitioners and cultural tourists throughout the year.
