Chilseon Valley has the most picturesque scenery among the valleys of Jirisan Mountain and all sorts adjectives are used to describe its beauty. Alongside Cheonbuldong Valley of Seoraksan Mountain and and Tamla Valley of Hallasan Mountain, Chilseon Valley is recognized as one of the three greatest valleys in South Korea. As one of the valleys representing Jirisan Mountain, Chilseon Valley boasts a rugged mountain terrain, stunning landscapes, and the last primeval forest of Jirisan Mountain spanning over 18 km from the summit of Cheonwangbong Peak to Uitan, Macheon-myeon. The valley offers a panoramic spectacle of the great nature with its seven waterfalls and 33 natural pools.

Many of the spots in the valley have feminine names. Also, because of its gorges that get deeper and sharper as you venture further into the valley, many lives have succumbed to the ruggedness of Chilseon Valley, earning it the nickname of the Valley of Death. Many people who come to Jirisan Mountain want to visit Chilseon Valley but the valley doesn’t welcome people that easily. Winter climbing in Chilseon requires high-level of skills and even professional mountaineers undergo rigorous winter training and ascents in Chilseon Valley before embarking on expeditions to the Himalayas and other challenging peaks.

Usually, during the summer months, people avoid visiting the valley on their ascent to Cheonwangbong Peak. Instead, hikers typically ascend Cheonwangbong via alternative routes and visit Chilseon Valley on their way down. While the total length of Chilseon Valley is 18 kilometers, the actual hiking route from Chuseong-dong to Cheonwangbong Peak covers 14 kilometers.
