Hwarimdonggyegok (Valley)

  • As the area's reputation as the village of Seonbi (traditional scholars), Hamyang still has about 100 pavilions which were used by scholars to discuss with friends while having drinks or having a meal during the trip to Hanyang (Seoul's old name). Especially, Hwarimdonggyegok in Seoha-myeon was enroute to go to Hanyang with students from the Gyeongsang area to take the King's test to select officials. And Hwarimdong is famous for its beautiful pavilions and constructions in places with a great view. At present, the famous pavilions and spots such as Nongwoljeong Place, Donghojeong, -Gunjajeong and Geoyeonjeong are connected with a wooden bridge completing the 6.2㎞ course, ‘Seonbi Culture Expedition Road’ (established in 2006) visiting the forests and valleys where the ancient Seonbis and students stayed and enjoyed the visit. Walking along the road, often wide and flat rocks are found near pavilions. And some of the rocks have names meaning 'Rock in the moon lighted pond' or 'Large enough to cover the sun' made by some unknown scholars having a good time with friends or colleague scholars drinking rice wine.
