Where Green Hope Begins – Watermill Village, Hamyang
A City of Refined, Traditional Culture
At the center of the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, there is Hamyang, a land of abundance.
A city that embraces Korea’s unique refinements –
Just like the name of the city, which means “An overwhelming ray of light”, Hamyang has become a bright and warm place for living.
Hamyang is the home of mystics of nature and Neo-Confucianism. It is where the traditional Confucian and Buddhist cultures began and are preserved to this date.
It is also the home of numerous scholars in history such as Go-wun Choi Chi-won, Jeom-pil-jae Kim Jong-jik, Il-du Jeong Yeo-chang and Yeonam Park Ji-won. It is also preserving the sacred spirit of scholars with ancient lecture halls and Confucian academies such as Namgye Lecture Hall and numerous pavilions throughout the city.
The watermill, which was a first in Hamyang and a first in Korea by the scholar Yeomam Park Ji-won, has been the beginning of wisdom of Hamyang’s citizens as they learned about life from nature.
The scholar spirit of writing poems and enjoying romance in pavilions surrounded by nature has been preserved to this day. As a result, Hamyang has become a traditional culture & arts city with various elegant cultural events such as the Mt. Jirisan Jeilmun Mountain Concert, Sanglim Saturday Performance, Yeonam Culture Festival, and Nosacho Cup Baduk Competition.
A City of Tourism, Well-being, and Suburban Vacation
From the Mt. Jirisan Observation Park, where you can see Cheon-wang Peak and Ban-ya Peak at a glance, to Jirisan Hiking Path, which boasts the best trekking in Jeil-mu, to the Odoje Road, which symbolizes a dragon and is one of Korea’s 100 most beautiful roads, Hamyang boasts stunning scenery for the tourists.
Sang-lim, which is Korea’s first man-made forest created by Gowun Choi Chi-won of Silla, is also an ancient treasure of Hamyang.
The mystics of nature in Mt. Jiri and Deokyoo show off their beautiful colors in the mountains, valleys, rivers and fields. And unique experiences are waiting for you in this great natural environment.
An Abundant & Wealthy City
Hamyang, which is surrounded by a clean natural environment, is achieving the dream of green growth based on its clean industries, which are the new growth engine of the local economy.
The 100+100 Campaign, which is designed to create 100 farms with over 100 million Won in annual income and helps over 100 seniors live past 100 years of age, are the representative policies of Hamyang.
Nurturing wealth farmers with over 100 million Won in income has become a successful model for overcoming the FTA era of infinite competition beyond borders, and it is being benchmarked by other nations around the world.
Based on an eco-friendly organic cultivation method from nature, the agricultural products of Hamyang are produced into healthy food through the new cultivation method of the Agriculture, Forestry & Food Research Center and strict quality inspections.
By raising mountain ginseng and mountain herbs in the clean region of Baekdoo Mountain Range and developing the region’s folk resources into a functional food industry, Hamyang is nurturing healthy and abundant farming and creating greater hope and opportunities.
